Education as a means to fight domestic violence

Continual domestic violence lacks awareness

Domestic abuse occurs because of the desire of a significant other to control the relationship and the partner through physical, mental, psychological, emotional or economical means. Domestic abuse is common in India and in the saddest scenario, it is made common – ‘It happens, power through for the sake of the family’ – a common pronunciation in the Indian household.

Why do they stay in the relationship?

Willingly – Sometimes it’s nice and sometimes there’s nothing else.

They stay in the relationship willingly despite the abuse. A lack of awareness is the reason for this. This ignorance makes it impossible for the victim to let go of the relationship. In the name of marriage, the abuser gets away with the behaviour. The victim in an abusive relationship has a hard time leaving the relationship because of low self-esteem, hope of change in the behaviour, the false pretence of love, and because of the fear of dangerous consequences. Education provides the awareness about helplines and clear concept of a healthy relationship. In this aspect, education plays a life-saving role. It shows a way of the abusive bubble.

Unwillingly – Out of respect for the institution.

The institution of marriage is held in high esteem that it makes the victim to endure the abuse. Add children and economic inconvenience to the equation, it seems almost impossible to think a life outside of the relationship. The victims endure the abuse for the sake of the children because growing up in a broken family impacts a child badly. What they don’t understand is what the abusive relationship does to the child’s worldly outlook. Here’s where education can help. It will beat the age-old custom of marriage out of people’s system. It shows the positive sides of divorce and how the children in the relationship are better off. Education also provides solutions to the economic situation.

Impact on the children

The entire outlook of a child’s world can change drastically when they go in direct contact with domestic abuse. At many cases, an abused child can’t even make a regular conversation. They tend to be depressed and anxious. They would have much difficulty in leading a normal life and their relationships would be highly questionable.

Education is one of the best ways for the children to break free of their anxious stricken routine. It helps them survive the cut-throat world. CMS provides assistance in this process. Our plan of action includes providing education for all children despite their social status.
